I grew up in a Caribbean household where one thing was clear: looking beautiful came with a price.
If you know, you know.
The hot comb, hissing on the stove.
The perm box in the kitchen.
Hours sitting between Mama’s knees while she parted, braided, and pulled.
The scalp burns. The tender-headed tears.
And yet… the best part was always at the end. When it was finally done. When I’d look in the mirror and see myself smoothed, polished, revealed. Like the beauty was always there, just waiting to be unwrapped.
As I got older, that message never really changed. Beauty was still supposed to hurt.
But then I had five kids of my own. One boy, four girls, and something in me shifted.
I wanted them to grow up knowing their beauty wasn’t something they had to earn or suffer for. It was already there. Always there.
